2020 SLV Seed Exchange – In the middle, our Seed Swap Table with community members selecting seeds; along the sides are the vendor booths.

The SLV Seed Exchange recently went from a small group of people hosting a community event each year, to becoming a Colorado based non-profit organization with 501c3 status through our fiscal sponsor, ScSeed.  We have expanded the event over the years to host a curated ‘speaker series’ with different themes each year, always centered around saving seeds, growing food and building community. We are excited to now be able to accept tax-deductible donations!

This event is made possible by community volunteers and the generosity of Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa, who has donated their space and staff to host this event since 2014.

How we currently use donations:

  • Pay for advertising the event
  • Provide honorarium to some our keynote speakers
  • Pay some of our volunteers a stipend for their considerable time spent organizing the event
  • Pay for website domain and hosting
  • Support local school garden programs from our Day-of-Donations

Upcoming projects funded with your support:

  • Hiring a professional videographer to shoot and edit our Speaker Series so we can publish them online, making them accessible to the world. See what we’ve captured, so far, here.
  • Establishing a Seed Saving Garden dedicated to breeding popular varieties of foods specifically acclimated to our area.
  • Developing a year-round agricultural educational program for youth and young adults,
  • Capacity to provide scholarships to some participants in educational programs
  • Developing an event in the southern SLV – hosting a Farm to Table Harvest Dinner & Seed Swap / Fundraiser.

Perks of donating:

  • Our 150+ event attendees will be given a program with your name or logo in it.
  • Posters and PSAs will be broadcast from Salida to Taos.
  • You’ll be supporting and growing a long-standing tradition in the SLV.
  • You’ll be supporting agricultural education and community building in our region. ie Food Sovereignty
  • You’ll be supporting the autonomous production of local, organic foods and seed saving. ie more Food Sovereignty
  • All donations, after we’ve covered our expenses, go towards Saguache County school garden programs.
  • Your donation is tax-deductible.

The Moffat Preschool has been enjoying their greenhouse this year! At the beginning of the school year, the children had the opportunity to check in on some of the plants, fruits, and vegetables that were already growing. At the end of February, the greenhouse was made ready for new planting to occur, and since that time, the Preschoolers have gotten to plant radishes and snow peas, and have made predictions about what they think will happen to the seeds and plants as they sprout and grow. More planting is planned for the remainder of the Spring, and the goal is to show the Preschoolers how food gets to our tables: from planting the seeds, caring for the plants, and harvesting them.  We are so grateful to the SLV Seed Exchange for their support of this program and what it means for our Preschoolers. It has been a wonderful way to remind our kids how to connect with and care for our planet Earth.
